2024 PRFN ELECTION

Notice is hereby given that the Prophet River First Nation has called an Election for August 13, 2024, in accordance with the Prophet River First Nation Custom Electoral Code (2009), for the purpose of electing one (1) candidate to the Office of Chief and two (2) candidates to the Office of Councillor, for the ensuing three (3) year term of office.

VOTE IN PERSON

Members of Prophet River First Nation who are eighteen (18) years of age or older as of the date of the Election are eligible to vote. The official Voters List of all Electors who are eligible to vote shall be posted and available during regular business hours at the PRFN Administration Office; can be requested from the Electoral Officer; and will be available to download at: www.onefeather.ca/nations/prophetriver.

VOTE BY MAIL-IN BALLOT

Mail-in ballot packages will automatically be mailed to all electors for whom a current mailing address has been provided. Any elector may request a mail-in ballot package from the Electoral Officer.

Call for Appeal Board Members

Potential volunteers should email [email protected] with their full legal name, date of birth/ status number (to verify that they are eligible electors), and contact information.

  • The Appeal Board Shall be comprised of three (3) Electors (over 18 years of age) and three (3) Alternates, who collectively be representative of a least two (2) Family Groups 
  • Appeal Board members shall not;
    • Be employees of the Prophet River First Nation
    • Be employees of any Prophet River First Nation owned-company
    • be candidates
    • Belong to the Immediate Family of a Candidate; or
    • Other be in a conflict of interest, as determined by the Electoral Officer
  • At the end of the Nomination Meeting the Electoral Officer will call for volunteers from the Electors present to fill the appeal board and alternate’s positions
  • If there are no volunteers present at the meeting the Electoral Officer can select individuals from the Electors at large who meet the requirements.
    • Volunteers may also be accepted prior to the nomination meeting but time will be made for any volunteers in attendance at the meeting
  • Within 3 days of the selection of the Appeal Board, members may object to the appointment if those appointed do not fit the requirements
  • Within 15 days following either the Nomination Meeting or Election, an Appeal can be filed with the Electoral Officer
  • Within 14 days of the receipt of the Notice of Appeal the Electoral Officer shall determine where the Notice of Appeal meets the requirements/grounds of appeal, if the requirements are met
    • The Appeal Board and Alternates will be notified,
    • Each candidate will receive a copy of the Notice of Appeal
    • A date will be set for the hearing, within 30 days of the initial receipt of the appeal
  • Within 7 business days of the hearing, the Appeal Board will make their decision based on section 10.20(c)

NOMINATION MEETING

JULY 15, 2024

Each member of the Prophet River First Nation (PRFN) who is at least eighteen (18) years of age as of the date of the Nomination Meeting shall be eligible to nominate or second one (1) person for Chief and two (2) persons for Councillor.

Nominations can be made by submitting a completed, signed, and witnessed Nomination and Declaration Form to the Electoral Officer by mail or email to [email protected] before the time set for the Nomination Meeting, or in person at the Nomination Meeting. Mailed nominations not received by the Electoral Officer before the time set for the Nomination Meeting are void.

A member is eligible to run for office if he or she:

  1. is at least 18 years old as of the date of the Nomination Meeting;
  2. is not otherwise disqualified by the Electoral Code.

Also note that elected members of the Band Council must reside within sufficient proximity to the Reserve such that they can commute to the Band Administration on a daily basis to perform their duties.

Within forty-eight (48) hours after the conclusion of the Nomination Meeting, each nominee who wishes to run for office must provide to the Electoral Officer:

  1. a completed Acceptance Form; and
  2. a deposit of $150.00 for Chief Candidates, or $75.00 for Councillor Candidates, in the form of cash or a certified cheque made payable to the Prophet River First Nation.

The Election Code, supporting documents, and the official Voters List of all Electors who are eligible to vote shall be posted and available during regular business hours at the PRFN Administration Office; can be requested from the Electoral Officer; and will be available to download at:
