Position Summary
The Elders Coordinator advocates for the needs of Elders within the Prophet River community. This position works to keep Elders connected to the community and assists them to navigate resources and services to meet their health and wellness needs. Â
Primary/Core Responsibilities
Learns and performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Prophet River First Nation policies, standards, practices and procedures, as directed by the Director of Health and Wellness. Â
All employees are expected to conduct themselves in a professional and ethical manner that respects and promotes the cultural values of Prophet River First Nation.
Elders Program and Activities
- Develops and coordinates various and culturally aligned activities for Prophet River Elders.Â
- Ensures that traditional and cultural health and wellness approaches are incorporated into Elders programming.
- Collaborates with the Health & Wellness team to develop new programs and activities and deliver joint programming and special community events.
- Seeks feedback and ideas from elders and community members for future programs and activities. Maintains open communication with members.Â
- Acts as a resource to other Health & Wellness staff regarding culturally appropriate community wellness approaches.
Community Relationships
- Develops strong rapport and builds trusting relationships with Prophet River Elders.
- Visits with Elders in their homes or other community settings.
- As a language speaker and knowledge holder, keeps Elders connected to Prophet River culture and language.
- Encourages Elders to connect socially with community members and/or participate in activities and events.
- Arranges transportation for Elders to ensure access to the community and activities.
- Helps elders navigate services, resources and programs that are available to them.
- Works with Director of Health and Wellness and department team members to refer and support Elders and advocate on their behalf.Â
- Visits with Elders while in hospital. Provides emotional support and assists with communication between patients, families, medical staff and social workers as required.
- Visits with Elders recently released from medical facilities to check on recovery and progress. Makes referrals to the Community Health Nurse and/or Home Support Team as appropriate.
Administration
- Prepares an activity schedule and works with the Director of Health and Wellness to budget for any associated costs.Â
- Develops promotional strategies to maximize participation in various activities and events.
- Maintains records and activity reports related to programs and events – i.e. participation, feedback from participants, summary of costs etc.Â
- Provides input and recommendations with regard to existing or proposed programs.
Other General Duties

- All employees are expected to display and promote a genuine respect for Prophet River First Nation culture and protocols.
- May work with the Health & Wellness team to run activities and events in other program areas. May provide back up to other programs as required during vacation or leaves.Â

Qualifications
Training, Education and Experience
- Prior experience working with elders and wellness programs.
- Experience working with or within an Indigenous community.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector).
- Level 1 First Aid and CPR.
- Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s License is an assetÂ
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Prophet River knowledge holder and language speaker.
- Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to build strong caring relationships built on trust.Â
- Good client services skills. Friendly, positive, responsive, professional and helpful.
- Ability to design, deliver and assess effective and culturally relevant programing and activities for elders.Â
- Ability to facilitate group activities as well as working with individuals one to one.
- Patient, with the ability to show compassion and understanding.
- Professional with the ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Basic computer and administration skills.Â
- Able to work independently with minimal day-to-day supervision as well as working within a collaborative team framework. Able to encourage, foster and model cooperative approaches for the well-being of the Prophet River community and our members.
- Ability to demonstrate and promote a genuine respect for Prophet River First Nation culture and protocols.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a variety of settings including the Health Centre, elder’s homes and other community settings. Flexibility to work a varied schedule including evenings and weekends as required. Occasional travel to Fort Nelson or Fort St. John to accompany elders to medical visits or visit in hospital.Â
