Position Summary

Reporting to Executive Director of Lands

Primary/Core Responsibilities

The GIS Technician contributes to the Land Department as directed by the Executive Director of Lands. Supports the lands team in the management of the landbase through anaylysis of impacts, mapping of impacts and disturbances, past, present and future (when planned) and does attribute analysis on referral files as needed.  Attribute analysis includes, wildlife, streams, fisheries, cultural research and identification with regards to referrals in the oil and gas, forestry, mining, and other industrial activities as they come forward.  

This position contributes to building the capabilities of PRFN lands staff to maximize the potential of GIS and related geospatial and information technologies through the development, implementation, evaluation and dissemination of data brought forward by proponents and integrating the data, through analysis to ensure the land department has all available tools available to make informed landbase management decisions.  Outputs from this position are used for development of cultural and science-based policy, standards and guidelines for natural resource management, and informed planning and decision-making regarding resource management activities.

The GIS Technician will work collaboratively with the lands department to determine the methods for collection, integration, maintenance, analysis, storage and distribution of digital corporate data. 

In cooperation with the Referrals Technician, the GIS Technician will be the first point of contact for referrals coming to the lands department, map, produce initial conflict report to Executive Director of Lands and Lands Manager.  

Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

A technical diploma, degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geography, Computer Science, Resource Management, or related field and 1 years relevant experience; OR • Technical Diploma in GIS and 4 years (gained within the last 5 years) of relevant experience. 

Relevant experience must include: • Minimum of two (1) years’ experience using ESRI ArcGIS 10.x or ArcPro for spatial analysis, cartography, and data management.

Experience in managing and implementing geospatial projects, providing geospatial solutions and delivering complex analysis projects in support of the land department needs.

Experience providing geospatial advice to non-technical people and in ensuring the provision of technical products that meet the needs of the lands department.

Experience in automating GIS workflows using python scripting GIS experience supporting resource management. 

Working Conditions 

Work is performed primarily in an office environment.  Occasional travel to attend meetings or training is required.  This position can be filled remotely.  

An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.

This is a permanent full-time position working 35 hours per week.
