Position Summary
Working under the direction of and reporting to the Principal/Head Teacher the Librarian/Tutor provides services and resources that allow students to develop skills in locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and using the information to solve problems. Assists with the education and facilitation of learning activities for students as well as ensuring a safe environment for students.
Tutor Primary/Core Responsibilities
Classroom Activities
- Assists teacher(s) on a daily basis to deliver activities and supervise students
- Assists in preparing and arranging lesson materials and displays as directed by the Principal/Head Teacher
- Facilitates math and reading activities and oversees the completion of related work Oversees classroom activities, delivers lesson plans and ensures continued student
- learning in the event of the teacher’s absence
- Provides direct assistance to students with special education needs
- Ensuring students follow proper procedures and behaviour practices in the classroom
- Working with Teacher(s) and parents to discuss student progress
- Assists in the supervision and training of students in the development of life skills and performance of daily activities
- Helps students with various activities, such as arts & crafts, catch-up work, music, etc.
- Other duties as assigned
Librarian Primary/Core Responsibilities
- Create a library
- Effectively plan school library program to meet identified needs
- Provide group instruction and individual guidance to students to help them locate resources and use research techniques
- Consult teaches on appropriate use of materials and help them schedule materials for classroom instruction
- Serve as an information resource for students
- Manage acquisitions, processing, organizing, distribution, maintenance and inventory of resources ∙ Coordinate development and maintenance of community resource file
- Maintain schedules for instructional television programs and encourage the use of video programs for educational purposes
- Create a library environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity level and interests of students
- Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement ∙ Interact with students to promote positive attitudes toward the school library
- Compile, maintain and file all physical and computerized reports, records and other documents required
- Other duties as assigned
Health and Safety
- Follows guidelines relating to health and safety and reportable incidents
- Assists in keeping the classroom area, library and hallways clean and organized Monitors for the safety of the children, including supervision at playtime, gym, lunch and recess
- Monitors the environment daily for potential hazards, takes preventative action as required, and reports all concerns to the Principal/Head Teacher
Qualifications
Training, Education and Experience
- At least one year of post-secondary education
- EA certificate or two years of working experience in schools with students
- Clear criminal record check with the vulnerable sector
- Must have data collection skills
- Must have excellent communication skills
- Vast knowledge and library databases
