Wildfire Update – May 21
We continue to be optimistic about the fire situation. Over the weekend, there was no significant fire growth in the Parker Lake Fire, and the weather has continued to be favourable for fire suppression.
Fireguards continue to be constructed strategically for the Parker Lake and Patry Creek wildfires, and aviation resources support them by bucketing hot spots burning in steep and challenging terrain.
Highway 97 (Alaska Highway) and Highway 77 remain closed north of Fort Nelson. For those travelling to Fort Saint John, there is also a block at Sikanni. We ask that people continue to be patient to ensure safety for all.
The RCMP continues to have a presence in the area, and you will notice them patrolling the community on foot and on the highway to ensure safety and security.
The EOC met today and continues to meet daily to build our emergency plan and plan for essential services. Due to ongoing wildfire risks, we are continuing to be vigilant and well-prepared in the event of an emergency. We ask that people continue to be patient and fire-smart to ensure safety for all.
Unfortunately, we have had to postpone the Gathering of Drummers. We hope to be able to reschedule it soon.
I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all our members and staff who have stepped up to help over the past week. I am incredibly proud of everyone assisting with highway patrol, engaging with the community, going door to door to keep members informed, and bringing in food.
We have all united to support each other. Together, we are stronger.
