Home Support Worker

The Home Support worker provides service to community members who require support in their homes.

Homecare Services and Support

  • Plans and prepares meals independently or with the client.
  • Checks food for expiration dates in the home pantry and refrigerator.
  • Performs household cleaning including:
  • Vacuuming, sweeping, mopping and dusting
  • General cleaning of kitchen surfaces and equipment
  • Washes dishes/loads dishwasher
  • Cleans and sanitizes bathroom
  • Tidies and organizes rooms
  • Removes garbage and recycling
  • Performs laundry services including changing and washing bedding, towels and client clothing.
  • Any other tasks outlined in the client care plan.

Administration

  • Maintains a log of visits and services and submits reports as required.
  • Informs supervisor of any client emergencies or other client concerns.
  • Informs supervisor of any observations that may affect a client’s safety.

Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Training, Education and Experience

  • Experience in personal care and home management tasks and working with the elderly and people with disabilities.
  • Food Safe certification.
  • Up-to-date immunizations.
  • Experience working with or within an Indigenous community.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector).
  • Level 1 First Aid and CPR.
  • Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s License.

  • Ability to follow client home management plans.
  • Strong cultural sensitivity and understanding. 
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to build strong caring relationships built on trust. 
  • Physical ability to perform home management duties.
  • Well organized and proactive with strong time management skills.
  • Good client services skills. Friendly, positive, responsive, professional and helpful.
  • Patient, with the ability to show compassion and understanding.
  • Professional with the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Basic computer and administration skills. 
  • Able to work independently with minimal day-to-day supervision as well as working within a collaborative team framework.  Able to encourage, foster and model cooperative approaches for the well-being of the Prophet River community and our members.
  • Ability to demonstrate and promote a genuine respect for Prophet River First Nation culture and protocols.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a variety of settings including the Health Centre, and client homes. Regular lifting, bending, stooping to perform home support tasks is required.  May also deal with challenging client behavior from time to time.
